On June 18, 2020, I was admitted to Brookshire Residence and Rehabilitation Skilled Nursing Facility following a stroke. At the time, I was unable to sit up or get out of bed, I couldn’t walk, dress myself, or use the toilet. I wasn’t able to think clearly and I was very confused. Immediately, I met the rehabilitation team, and was provided with an individualized treatment plan. I was enrolled into speech, physical, and occupational therapy. At first, cognitive, physical, and occupational exercises were completed at bedside. I knew with hard work, and the support from the rehab team, I would accomplish my goal of going home.
In early August, after weeks of exercise and training, I was more mobile in bed, able to sit up, roll over, and even stand with assistance from the therapists. My cognitive skills were improving and I was more oriented and able to communicate my complex needs. On September 17, 2020, I took my first steps using a walker and walked 10 feet. It was hard but the rehab team kept me motivated to work even harder.
By late October, I was walking more than 150 feet with the use of a walker. I required less assistance to transfer in and out of my bed as well as wheelchair. My fine motor skills were increasing and I was able to dress myself with assistance. I began more intense exercises as I could see the progress from therapy coming to fruition.
Finally in December, I was more independent at completing my activities of daily living. I was able to dress myself and complete personal hygiene tasks independently. I could move in and out of bed freely. I was able to use the toilet, transfer myself, and walk everywhere with use of a walker. I could think faster, longer, and complete more high-level thinking tasks.
Now in January of 2021, after 7 months, I will be discharging from Brookshire Residence and Rehab and going home! Thanks to the rehabilitation team I made progress toward my goals every month and have regained my independence! I am so grateful to the faculty at Brookshire for assisting in my recovery; without them my recovery would have not been possible. I wish to thank Brooke, Linh, David, Efe, Cheryl, and Aaron for working with me and treating me like family.

My 89-year-old father tested Covid positive a few days after Christmas, 2020. His retirement home did not have a Covid unit at the time of his positive test, so we were in a dilemma. We were pleased to find there was a private room in the Covid unit at Brookshire Residence and Rehab Center in Brookshire, Texas, about a 30-minute trip from the southwest part of Houston. The Director of Marketing, Saul Gauthier, navigated the whole transfer for us and made the entire experience less stressful than it would have been.
Once my father arrived, he was treated with the upmost care and professionalism. The nurses checked his temperature and vitals often and provided the family with updates. Although the facility is not new, the care my father received while there was exceptional. In addition, he was able to have speech, OT, and physical therapy each day, and he enjoyed the opportunity to get some exercise and to work with enthusiastic, helpful therapists. The therapists also kept the family apprised of his activities and worked to keep my father from losing any strength during his Covid recovery.
The one drawback my father noted was the difficulty he had navigating the bathroom in his wheelchair. Otherwise, he had no complaints and only compliments; he ate well while there and was very positive about the meals.

Charles Sherwood was referred to Brookshire Residence after sustaining a fall. He required extensive physical therapy to strengthen his lower extremities, increase the range of motion in his left ankle, improve his overall gait and promote safety and independence while ambulating.
Since he also experienced pain and weakness in his right upper extremities, Charles received occupational therapy to increase functionality in ADLs and reduce risk of falls during transfers. To improve his cognitive skills, Charles also participated in speech therapy designed to enhance short term memory, deduction/reasoning and problem solving skills.

In all his therapies, Charles has made great strides in his short and long terms goals. He is currently walking with standby assistance with a hemi-walker and an ankle foot orthotic for his left foot. He has gained independence in upper and lower extremity, dressing with minimal assistance.

Charles’ compliance throughout his plan of care has given him with functional skills that will carry over into every area in ADLs. He has developed many compensatory strategies in all areas targeted and his level of participation in all of his therapies has contributed to his overall success.
